Every employer needs one. It is in the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999, Regulation 7.
A competent person is someone with the training, knowledge and experience to help you meet your health and safety duties. In a larger firm that might be an in house safety manager. In most small and medium businesses it is an external advisor.
SSIP schemes will ask who your competent person is and want evidence of their qualifications, usually a CV and certificates.
Our competent person service is run by a NEBOSH qualified, IOSH member and IMaPS CDM advisor with 30 years in construction health and safety. 1, 3 and 5 year plans are available. Call SSIP Help on 07917 307942 or email office@ssiphelp.co.uk.
