There is a new game called Find The Needle appearing on Steam, based around the familiar idea of finding a needle in a haystack. It raised a smile here because, while the game may be new, businesses have been coming to Find the Needle for a very different kind of search since 2004.
For more than 20 years, Find the Needle has been helping buyers find UK businesses, manufacturers, suppliers and service providers across a huge range of industries.
And in many ways, the name makes just as much sense today as it did when the website first launched.

Making it easier to find the right supplier
Finding the right company can sometimes feel a little like searching for that proverbial needle in a haystack.
A Google search can produce thousands or even millions of results. Some will be relevant, some will be outdated and others may have very little to do with what the buyer actually needs.
Find the Needle was created to make that process easier by bringing UK businesses together within a dedicated trade directory where potential customers can search for companies, products and services in one place.
Over the years the directory has developed far beyond a simple list of company names and telephone numbers. Businesses can now use their listings to showcase products, publish company news, upload videos and documents and give potential customers a much better understanding of what they offer.
The way people search has changed
The internet of 2004 looked very different from the internet businesses use today.
Search engines have become considerably more sophisticated, websites have moved from desktop computers to smartphones and people increasingly expect to find detailed information about a company before they ever pick up the phone or send an enquiry.
More recently, AI-powered search tools have added another change to the way information is discovered online. Platforms such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI-powered search features are giving users new ways to research companies, products and suppliers.
Despite all of those changes, one principle has remained remarkably consistent: businesses need to make themselves easy to find and give potential customers enough information to understand what they do.
That is where an established business directory can still play an important role.
More than simply another link
A Find the Needle listing provides businesses with an additional presence away from their own website.
For companies regularly adding products, news and other useful information, it can also provide another place for search engines and potential customers to discover their business.
This is particularly useful for specialist manufacturers and suppliers operating in markets where customers may not necessarily know the name of the company they are looking for. Instead, they are searching for a particular product, capability or service.
A detailed directory presence gives those businesses another opportunity to appear during that research process.
Supporting UK businesses for more than two decades
Since launching in 2004, Find the Needle has worked with businesses ranging from small specialist suppliers through to established manufacturers and national companies.
The technology behind the internet continues to change and the way buyers search will undoubtedly continue changing with it. Search engines, AI systems and new platforms will all influence how businesses are discovered in the years ahead.
Our aim, however, remains much the same as it was at the beginning: to help UK businesses get found and to make it easier for buyers to discover the companies, products and services they need.
So while there may now be another way to Find The Needle online, we've been helping businesses do exactly that since 2004.
