Thin section radial ball bearings, better known to cyclists as cartridge bearings, work as bottom bracket bearings and hub bearings on road and mountain bikes.
They come with metal shields, rubber contact seals or 2RU low friction rubber seals. For wet riding, stainless steel versions and waterproof lubricants are available. The standard grease is a water-resistant, hard-wearing lithium type, and bearings can be relubricated with fully waterproof marine grade grease.
On the ceramic question, research cited by SMB shows switching from steel to hybrid ceramic cuts friction by about three per cent at low speed. The catch: cheap hybrids lose that advantage because they are not made to the same standard.
