Seawater is brutal on bearings. In marine engineering, from offshore renewables to leisure craft, you have to trade some load capacity for corrosion resistance.
440 grade stainless is common but has limited resistance to seawater and salt spray. Passivation, a nitric or citric acid treatment that strips free iron from the surface, helps, but it will still corrode unless protected.
316 grade, known as marine grade, works above the waterline or in flowing water. It cannot be hardened, so load and speed ratings are much lower.
For fully submerged or heavier duty, SMB Bearings points customers towards full ceramic or plastic bearings.
