Aluminium low loader ramps are low maintenance, but they are not no maintenance. A few regular checks keep them safe and extend their working life.
Start with a visual check before use. Look for bent or cracked profiles, damage to the running surface and anything caught in the ramp. A quick look takes seconds and can save a nasty surprise.
Keeping a simple record of ramp checks is good practice, especially for fleets. It shows you are looking after your equipment and helps spot ramps that are wearing faster than expected, so they can be replaced before they become a problem.
Check the fittings. On lip ramps, make sure the steel pin and movable safety device are present and working. On hinged ramps, look at the hinge for wear. On hook ramps, check the hook and the guide rail for damage.
Keep ramps clean of mud and debris, especially on the running surface where it affects grip. Aluminium is weather resistant and will not rust, but caked dirt hides damage. If a ramp is damaged, take it out of use and replace it.
A good set of ramps is a long term purchase. Choosing strong, weather resistant aluminium and the right size up front means years of reliable loading, rather than a cycle of repairs and replacements.
Operators load more confidently on ramps that feel solid. A stable, well supported ramp lets them focus on steering and throttle control rather than worrying about what the ramp is doing underneath them.
