Waterjet Cutting Composites

Waterjet cutting composites avoids delamination and heat damage. PRV cuts carbon fibre, glass fibre and laminate materials for aerospace and industrial use. From its 54,000 sq ft site in Pontypool, South Wales, PRV Engineering has been machining, fabricating and finishing for UK industry since 1986.

Cutting is done on an Idroline S 1730 hydro-abrasive waterjet with an X axis of 3000mm, Y axis of 1700mm and Z stroke of 350mm. A B axis tilt of +/-60 degrees allows bevel and 5 axis cutting, and the R axis handles tubes from 42mm to 508mm diameter, up to 2570mm long and 400kg. Because it is a cold process there is no heat affected zone, no hardening and no distortion. Narrow kerf gives excellent material yield, and many parts need no secondary finishing at all.

Laser and plasma are quick on thin mild steel, but they bring heat. That means hardened edges, distortion and changed material properties. Waterjet avoids all of that, cuts almost any material and handles thick plate that laser can't touch. For armour, hardened steel, titanium, copper, composites and anything heat sensitive, waterjet is the right call.

Aerospace parts need precision, complex geometry and material integrity. PRV machines titanium, aluminium and nickel alloys on multi-axis plant, and waterjet cuts heat sensitive materials without any heat affected zone.

Batch size is not a problem. One-offs, pre-production runs and high volume schedules all go through the same controlled process. Materials cover the full spread from mild steel to titanium and nickel alloys, and Kanban, VMI, consignment and JIT supply can be set up for repeat lines.

PRV keeps things simple for buyers. One quote covers every process, one purchase order covers the whole job, and one team is accountable for the result. Material certificates, inspection reports and conformity paperwork are supplied as required.

One supplier, one order, one point of contact. That is the PRV promise. Every major process from cutting to final finish is done in Pontypool under ISO 9001:2015, with BS EN 1090 EXC3, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001 alongside. A continuous improvement and design for manufacture mindset means customers often end up with a better part at a lower cost.
