Large Format Machining for Defence

Large format machining for defence covers hull parts, mounts and structural sections. PRV machines them accurately in armour grade and structural materials. PRV Engineering has been trading from Pontypool, South Wales since 1986 and now runs a well equipped 54,000 sq ft facility.

Large work is handled on two dedicated machines. The Takumi H22S high speed machining centre offers X 2200mm, Y 1650mm and Z 800mm for aluminium plates and structures. The Kao-Ming KMC-3000SVH 5 face machining centre, with high torque for steel, offers X 3230mm, Y 1950mm and Z 775mm. Five face access means big parts are machined on most sides in a single clamping, keeping datums true across the whole component.

Big parts bring big headaches if the machine is too small. Multiple set ups, re-fixturing and part flipping all add error and cost. Large format machines take the whole part in one go, keep datums true and cut lead times. Ask any supplier for their actual table size and travels before you place large work, because not every shop that says large means it.

Defence work demands repeatable accuracy, full traceability and a supplier that can be trusted with sensitive programmes. PRV supports the defence sector with machined, cut, fabricated and finished parts, working to drawing and specification under ISO 9001:2015 quality control. Hardened steels, armour plate and specialist alloys are all handled routinely.

PRV works from customer drawings, specifications or OEM samples. Mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, copper and exotic alloys are all handled, in quantities from one to full production, with call off stock available to keep your shelves lean.

The process is simple. Send a drawing, CAD model, specification or sample. PRV reviews it, flags any manufacturing concerns and quotes promptly. Once ordered, the job is planned through the relevant departments, inspected against your requirements and dispatched with the paperwork you need.

Being a true one stop shop is the big advantage. A part can be cut, machined, welded, plated and painted without ever leaving the site, which cuts lead times, removes supplier handovers and keeps quality in one pair of hands. Accreditations include BS EN ISO 9001:2015, BS EN 1090 EXC3, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, Constructionline and Acclaim SSIP.
