5 Axis Machining for Defence

5 axis machining for defence handles complex housings, mounts and structural parts in a single set up. Fewer set ups mean better accuracy and full traceability through the process. Established in 1986, PRV Engineering operates from a 54,000 sq ft precision engineering facility in Pontypool, South Wales.

PRV runs a Mazak Integrex i400 mill/turn centre that machines parts up to 658mm diameter x 1585mm long with full 5 axis synchronous milling and turning. Alongside it sit Mazak VTC800/30SR vertical travelling column machines with full 5 axis synchronous milling and a large working envelope. The result is complex parts done in one hit, with fewer set ups, fewer handling errors and better feature to feature accuracy.

5 axis machining pays for itself on complex parts. Every extra set up on a 3 axis machine adds time, fixtures and a chance of error. Cutting the part in one clamping keeps features in true relation to each other and slashes lead time. If your part has angled holes, compound faces or sculpted surfaces, 5 axis is usually the smarter route.

Defence work demands repeatable accuracy, full traceability and a supplier that can be trusted with sensitive programmes. PRV supports the defence sector with machined, cut, fabricated and finished parts, working to drawing and specification under ISO 9001:2015 quality control. Hardened steels, armour plate and specialist alloys are all handled routinely.

Batch size is not a problem. One-offs, pre-production runs and high volume schedules all go through the same controlled process. Materials cover the full spread from mild steel to titanium and nickel alloys, and Kanban, VMI, consignment and JIT supply can be set up for repeat lines.

PRV keeps things simple for buyers. One quote covers every process, one purchase order covers the whole job, and one team is accountable for the result. Material certificates, inspection reports and conformity paperwork are supplied as required.

Being a true one stop shop is the big advantage. A part can be cut, machined, welded, plated and painted without ever leaving the site, which cuts lead times, removes supplier handovers and keeps quality in one pair of hands. Accreditations include BS EN ISO 9001:2015, BS EN 1090 EXC3, ISO 14001, ISO 45001, Constructionline and Acclaim SSIP.
