The project involved a comprehensive upgrade to two existing school science preparation rooms, with the primary goal of increasing and optimising the school prep room storage capacity while improving the overall layout. Following a detailed site survey, a thorough assessment of the available space was carried out. Multiple layout drawings were produced to explore the most effective use of the rooms. The client was presented with two distinct design options, each focusing on efficient storage and ease of access. The preferred solution was selected based on storage capacity and functionality.

The Design

Implementing a storage solution for the school’s prep room

The design incorporated a variety of storage solutions, including the use of Gratnell tray systems. As an example we standardised the storage method both within the prep rooms and across the wider science block. Standard shelving was installed to accommodate equipment and larger items, while a high-density roller racking system was implemented to make the best use of the available floor space. This solution allowed for the storage of a large volume of resources without compromising accessibility.

Additional Features

Additional features included robust workbenches with integrated Gratnell tray storage beneath, thereby providing a practical workspace and quick access to frequently used materials. The installation was carefully scheduled to take place during the school holidays. This ensured minimal disruption to teaching and learning. Completed on time and within budget, the project successfully delivered a highly functional, well-organised storage environment that supports the science department’s needs and ultimately enhancing operational efficiency.
