E Commerce Warehouse and Distribution
Storage Aspects have successfully delivered a comprehensive project to provide significantly expanded e-commerce warehouse and distribution facilities for a rapidly growing e‑commerce business based in Cambridgeshire. The project included designing, planning, and implementing enhanced storage capacity. This will support increased operational demands and future growth for the thriving online retailer.
Background to the Project
The client, experiencing rapid business growth, urgently required significant additional bulk storage capacity to accommodate pallets, along with forward holding pick shelving solutions. This is in order to efficiently manage their increasing inventory and streamline their operational logistics processes effectively.
Calculation of Storage Requirements
thoroughly appraised a selection of new warehouse units alongside the client. We provided detailed input on the potential for storage capacity, layout efficiency, and overall product flow. Recommendations were made to optimise operational performance and ensure the chosen facility would meet both current and future business needs.
We calculated the potential pallet space capacity within the warehouse, carefully reviewing how many pallets could be efficiently stored. Additionally, we assessed and determined appropriate pick bin numbers to support effective stock holding and streamline the order picking process. We thereby ensured that operations were both organised and optimised for productivity.
Delivery of Proposals for E Commerce Warehouse and Distribution
Provided detailed CAD drawings of the proposed layouts, accompanied by comprehensive concept-level costing summaries, enabling the management team to make informed business decisions regarding the potential leasing and operational suitability of a new warehouse unit.
Completion of the Design Phase
- Once the lease for the new warehouse unit was finalised, the design and layout planning for both the pallet racking and pick shelving were completed.
- The pallet racking layout was carefully optimised to achieve the maximum number of pallet spaces, ensuring efficient bulk storage for a wide variety of stock types.
- Collaboration with the manual handling equipment (MHE) supplier was undertaken from the outset. We confirmed that all forklifts, pallet trucks, and other equipment could operate safely and effectively within the racking system.
- Safety and functionality were prioritised. Checks were conducted to ensure that aisle widths, turning circles, and load capacities were fully compliant with operational requirements.
- The pick shelving layout was designed to maximise available picking bins, thus offering extensive storage for smaller and fast-moving items.
- Clear and structured picking routes were incorporated into the design, helping to reduce congestion and streamline the order picking process.
- The integration of efficient pathways not only enhances picking speeds but also improves overall warehouse productivity and safety.
- This combined approach of optimised racking and shelving ensures that the warehouse operates at peak efficiency from day one.
