Royal makeover for 28-year-old storage building at Princess Yachts’ HQ
Rubb UK returned to Plymouth to support Princess Yachts with the construction and re-sheet of a 28-year-old Rubb NV storage building. Princess Yachts is at the forefront of British yacht building. Based on the edge of the English Channel in Plymouth, Princess Yachts was established in 1965, and now operates as a shipyard covering over 1.1 million square feet. 3,000 craftsmen and woman make up their highly skilled and passionate workforce. Testament to Rubb’s highly engineered structures, Princess Yachts had purchased a second hand Rubb building dating back to 1989. This structure needed inspecting, constructing and re-sheeting to be able to support growing storage needs. The Rubb NV structure measures 12m wide x 27m long, with a 7m high sidewall. The high sidewalls meant this was the perfect building type for the marine environment and storage of vessels. From place of order to completion, this renew project only took the Rubb Service team five weeks to complete. This included the initial inspection to assess the repairs and planning the project to save time and costs. Then new PVC cladding sheets and door steelwork had to be manufactured before the Rubb construction team could carry out the work and return the building back to a fully functional storage building. Rubb Service Manager, Henry Moore commented: “This project for Princess Yachts has shown the quality of Rubb structures. After being in a marine environment for 28 years, subject to all the elements, this building has ended up looking like brand new and ready for another 28 years of service.” All Rubb structural steelwork is hot dip zinc galvanized, post production, to BS EN ISO 1461. Hot dip galvanized steel provides a consistent zinc finish on exposed and inside surfaces to prevent corrosion. Protection by galvanizing lasts in excess of 30 years, even with exterior usage in coastal environments.
