DELTA Expands Travelling Column Range with High-Capacity Mini 20 Surface Grinding Machine

DELTA has expanded its travelling-column surface grinding range with the new Mini 20, a fully automatic machine designed for larger and more demanding precision grinding applications. Available in the UK through RK International Machine Tools, the Mini 20 provides a maximum grinding length of 2100mm and a grinding width of up to 600mm, or 650mm with the optional 100mm wheel configuration.

DELTA has been manufacturing surface grinding machines in Italy since 1955 and has a long history of developing high-accuracy grinding technology. The company introduced travelling-column construction to its larger machines in the early 1980s and later brought the same principle to the smaller Mini range in 2005.

The Mini 20 uses stress-relieved Meehanite cast iron for the base, table, column and wheelhead. Its travelling-column structure is designed to maximise rigidity, reduce vibration and avoid the overhang issues sometimes associated with moving-head designs. This helps support consistent flatness across the working area.

Hydrostatic guideways are used on the X, Y and Z axes. A pressurised oil film separates moving surfaces, reducing sliding friction and wear while helping eliminate stick-slip movement. This contributes to smooth axis travel, repeatability and long-term retention of machine geometry.

The grinding spindle uses DELTA's established Mackensen hydrodynamic bearing arrangement. With no direct metal-to-metal contact during operation, the design supports quiet running, long service life and high-quality surface finishing.

Customers can choose from Diastep, CN Plus touchscreen and CNC control options. The Diastep system provides an intuitive interface for surface and plunge grinding cycles, roughing and finishing passes, automatic wheel dressing and dimensional compensation.
