PlayQuest has highlighted a new Association of Play Industries report examining the decline of outdoor play and learning opportunities as children progress through primary school.
The report found that 78% of Early Years Foundation Stage settings use outdoor areas throughout the day, but this falls to 16% by Key Stage 2. Play-based learning shows a similar decline, from 98% in EYFS to 10% in KS2.
PlayQuest says well-designed outdoor environments can support movement, imagination, social confidence and age-appropriate challenge throughout a child’s primary-school years. The report also notes that schools frequently rely on lower-cost, lower-risk features, while more challenging equipment is less common.
For schools working with limited budgets, PlayQuest points to the value of careful planning and using accredited suppliers that can provide consultation, planning, maintenance advice and long-term project support as well as installation.
