Maximising Space in Hotel Function Rooms with Movable Walls

At Monowa, we work with hotels, hospitality venues and conference centres across the UK to supply, install, service and maintain movable walls, sliding folding partitions and associated partition systems for busy commercial environments.

Hotel function rooms may be used for weddings, private dining, awards evenings, business lunches, seasonal events, training sessions and corporate hospitality, often within the same week. When these rooms are fixed in one layout, the available floor space can be difficult to use efficiently.

Movable walls for hotel function rooms give hotels a practical way to divide, open and reconfigure spaces without permanent construction. A larger function room can become smaller private rooms when required, then return to one open space for a larger booking.

Why hotel function rooms need flexibility

Hotel function rooms need to support different types of bookings. A room that works well for a large reception may feel too open for a private dinner or smaller business event. A room that cannot be opened up may also limit larger bookings.

Movable walls help hotel teams:

  • Create private areas

  • Divide larger function rooms into separate rooms

  • Open rooms for higher-capacity events

  • Match layouts to guest numbers

  • Improve room hire potential

  • Reduce reliance on permanent building work

For hotels, this makes function rooms more commercially useful. Instead of one large room being underused for smaller bookings, the same space can be adapted to suit the event format, number of guests and level of privacy required.

How movable walls maximise function room space

A hotel function room is often designed as one open space, but that format is not always the most practical option.

Movable wall systems allow function rooms to be divided with minimal disruption. Sliding walls, folding partition walls and acoustically specified movable walls can create separate rooms for:

  • Private dining

  • Meetings

  • Smaller celebrations

  • Drinks receptions

  • Training sessions

  • Corporate hospitality

The same room can then be opened again for larger hospitality events.

This helps hotels make better use of existing floor space while keeping layouts flexible. The right partition system can also support the appearance of the room, complementing the interior design, finishes and front-of-house standards.

Acoustic performance in hotel function rooms

Acoustic performance is important in hotel function rooms. Guests may be attending a private event in one area while a business meeting, dinner or drinks reception takes place nearby.

If sound travels too easily between divided spaces, it can affect:

  • Privacy

  • Guest comfort

  • Speeches and presentations

  • Dining atmosphere

  • The overall experience of the venue

Acoustic movable walls are designed to reduce noise transfer between adjacent rooms when closed. The level of sound reduction required will depend on how the rooms are used, the type of bookings taking place and the expectations of the venue.

Sound insulation depends on correct specification, installation, seals, panel alignment, floor conditions and the surrounding structure. Acoustic requirements should therefore be considered early in the project.

It is important to focus not just on the system, but the correct specification for any adjacent walls and ceilings including voids.

Choosing the right Monowa system

For hotel function rooms, we recommend partition and wall systems based on:

  • Opening size

  • Acoustic requirements

  • Structural support

  • Available space

  • Interior design

  • Frequency of use

MonoWall – Movable Wall Systems

MonoWall is our high performance operable wall system, typically specified for larger hotel function rooms, conference centres and hospitality suites.

The system consists of individual panels that are moved into position to create a secure room division when closed. When the room needs to be opened up, the panels stack neatly in a designated area.

MonoWall is a top hung system, meaning the weight is taken from above. It is usually fixed to suitable steel or concrete support and does not require a floor track. This makes it well suited to hotel interiors where floor finishes and regular operation are important.

MonoWall is suitable where strong acoustic performance, reliable operation and long term durability are required. A pass door can also be incorporated where access is needed without opening the full wall.

MonoFold – Sliding Folding Partitions

MonoFold is our sliding folding partition system. It is often used where flexible room division is required and structural support from above may not be available.

The hinged panels slide along a floor track, fold and stack to one or both sides of the opening. MonoFold can be configured as single parting or bi parting depending on the room layout.

MonoFold can be a cost effective option for meeting rooms, secondary function rooms and hospitality areas where a full operable wall system may not be required.

MonoGlaze and MonoFlect – Glazed Partition Systems

MonoGlaze and MonoFlect may be considered where glass, visibility and interior design are important.

These systems can help divide spaces while maintaining a more open visual feel. They may be suitable for hotel reception areas, meeting rooms or modern hospitality interiors where the partition needs to complement the surrounding design.

Installation in live hotel environments

Installing movable walls in operational hotels requires careful planning. Function rooms are often booked in advance, and works may need to be coordinated around guests, events, catering teams and other contractors.

Every Monowa project begins with a detailed site survey. We assess:

  • Room layout

  • Opening dimensions

  • Ceiling structure

  • Floor condition

  • Stacking area

  • Structural support

  • Acoustic requirements

  • Access routes

  • Finishes

This allows us to recommend the right system and identify any structural or operational considerations before installation.

Our installation team works with the hotel, architect, fit-out contractor or main contractor to plan the project and minimise disruption wherever possible.

Servicing and maintenance

Movable walls and sliding folding partitions need routine servicing to maintain safe and reliable operation.

We recommend a full service every 12 months depending on usage. In hotel function rooms, partitions may be operated frequently by events teams, so regular maintenance helps protect performance and reduce the risk of faults.

Servicing helps protect:

  • Panels

  • Rollers

  • Seals

  • Tracks

  • Pass doors

  • Operating components

It also helps identify alignment issues or worn parts before they cause disruption to planned events.

With appropriate maintenance, movable walls can provide long term flexibility and reliable performance within busy hotel environments.
