How Flexible Conference Spaces Support Changing Event Sizes with Movable Walls and Partition Systems

At Monowa, we work with conference venues, hotels, hospitality operators and commercial event spaces across the UK to supply, install, service and PPM (planned preventative maintenance) for all types of movable walls and sliding, folding, partition systems designed for flexible event environments.

Conference and hospitality venues need spaces that can respond to changing delegate numbers, varied room layouts and the different requirements of meetings, exhibitions, private functions and corporate events. Fixed walls can limit how efficiently a venue is used, whereas movable walls and folding partitions allow larger spaces to be divided, opened up and reconfigured without permanent structural alteration.

What are movable walls and sliding, folding partition systems in conference spaces?

Movable walls and Sliding, folding partitions systems are full height room division systems that allow a larger space to be separated into smaller areas or opened back up as required. Unlike permanent construction walls, they operate along track systems and can be stacked neatly when not in use.

In conference and event spaces, movable walls and partition systems are commonly used to:

  • Divide a large conference suite into smaller meeting rooms

  • Create private breakout spaces

  • Separate simultaneous events within the same venue

  • Open adjoining rooms for larger functions

  • Support changing delegate numbers throughout the day

Where higher levels of privacy and sound control are required, acoustic movable walls can be specified. These operable wall systems are designed to provide defined room separation while reducing sound transfer between adjacent event spaces.

They may also be referred to as operable walls, movable partition walls, sliding folding partitions, sliding walls or room dividers. While terminology varies, the purpose remains consistent: controlled room division that allows venues to adapt their space quickly and repeatedly.

Why use movable walls and sliding, folding partition systems in conference venues?

Conference spaces are rarely used in one fixed format. A room may need to host a large presentation in the morning, smaller seminar groups in the afternoon and a private dining event in the evening. Venues need layouts that can change without lengthy set-up times or permanent building work.

By installing movable walls and partition systems, venues can:

  • Reconfigure event space quickly

  • Make better use of existing floor area

  • Improve room hire potential

  • Separate meetings or events

  • Create private spaces for delegates

  • Adapt layouts around changing event sizes

This flexibility helps venues make more efficient use of their building. Instead of relying on one large room for one type of booking, the same space can be adapted to support multiple room layouts, event types and occupancy levels.

For venue operators, this creates a more practical and commercially useful space. For guests and event organisers, it provides a layout that feels appropriate to the size and purpose of the event.

Acoustic performance in conference environments

Acoustic control is important in conference and event spaces. When multiple meetings or functions are taking place at the same time, sound transfer can affect privacy, concentration and the overall delegate experience.

Depending on the system selected, acoustic movable walls and folding partitions can be specified to provide improved sound reduction between adjoining spaces. The required acoustic rating will depend on how the rooms are used, the level of privacy required and whether events are likely to run simultaneously.

Acoustic performance relies on correct specification for the movable walls and surrounding structures. Track systems, panel alignment, floor conditions, seals and locking mechanisms all contribute to the overall performance of the system.

For conference spaces, acoustic design should be considered early in the project. This helps ensure the selected movable wall system supports both flexibility and privacy.

Our systems for conference and event spaces

For conference and hospitality projects, we select systems based on opening size, acoustic requirement, structural conditions, interior design and frequency of operation.

MonoWall – Movable Wall Systems

MonoWall is our high performance movable wall system, typically specified for larger openings within conference centres, hotels and commercial event spaces.

These systems require structural support at the head and are usually fixed to steel beams or concrete slabs. MonoWall systems do not require a floor track, as the weight is taken at the head.

These operable walls consist of individual panels that move into position to form a secure room division when closed and stack neatly when opened. MonoWall systems are commonly used to divide large conference suites, function rooms, training spaces and hospitality venues.

MonoWall is often suitable where strong acoustic separation is required between adjoining rooms, or where a venue needs a robust partition system for regular reconfiguration.

Pass doors, if required, are available upon request.

MonoFold – Sliding Folding Partitions

MonoFold is our sliding folding partition system, often used where flexible room division is required and structural support from above is not available.

These hinged panels slide along a track, fold and stack to one or both sides of the opening. MonoFold sliding folding partitions can be configured as single parting or bi parting depending on the room layout and available space.

MonoFold can be a practical and cost effective option for meeting rooms, smaller conference areas, training rooms and hospitality spaces. These systems are generally floor mounted, meaning the weight is taken at the base.

A pass door is normally incorporated as part of the design where access is required without opening the full partition.

MonoGlaze and MonoFlect – Glazed Partition Systems

For venues where visibility, natural light and interior design are important, glazed partition systems may be considered.

MonoGlaze and MonoFlect systems can help divide spaces while maintaining a more open visual feel. These systems are particularly useful in commercial venues, reception areas, hospitality spaces and meeting environments where the division of space is required without creating a fully enclosed appearance.

Depending on the requirement, glass systems can support flexible layouts while complementing a modern commercial interior.

Installation within live conference and hospitality venues

We understand the constraints of working within operational conference venues, hotels and hospitality environments. Our process is structured to minimise disruption wherever possible.

Every project begins with a detailed site survey. We assess ceiling structure, floor condition, opening dimensions, stacking configuration, acoustic requirements, access requirements and the frequency of operation.

We provide a comprehensive service from consultation through to installation and handover, coordinating with the venue, architect, fit-out contractor or main contractor to programme works appropriately.

Installation is carried out in line with manufacturer guidance and current regulations to ensure safe and reliable performance.

Servicing, maintenance and compliance

Movable walls and partition systems require routine servicing to ensure continued safe operation.

We recommend a full service every 12 months depending on usage. In busy conference and hospitality venues, partitions may be operated frequently, so regular servicing is important for maintaining reliability, safety and performance.

Regular maintenance helps protect rollers, seals, locking mechanisms, tracks, pass doors and operating components. It also helps identify wear or alignment issues before they develop into more disruptive faults.

As part of our conference and hospitality offering across the UK, we provide planned maintenance programmes and reactive repair support for movable walls, sliding folding partitions and associated room division systems.
