Following our previous post in which we covered what the new ban on mobile phones in schools means, in this week’s post we take a close look at the lockable phone pouch solution.
From April 2026, the UK government has moved from guidance to a legal requirement banning mobile phone use in schools, with compliance now forming part of the Ofsted inspection framework.

What Is a Lockable Phone Pouch System?
A lockable phone pouch system allows students to keep their phones with them but securely locked away during the school day.
The system consists of two key elements:
- A secure lockable Faraday pouch for each student
- Magnetic unlocking stations for controlled access.
A Faraday pouch is a signal blocking pouch or sleeve that acts as a portable Faraday cage. Conductive materials in the pouch prevent electromagnetic signals, including RFID, Bluetooth, GPS and cellular communications, from entering or leaving the device. This means that phones contained in these pouches will not ring or ping in response to any received signals because they are blocked.
Without the signal blocking capability a pupil’s telephone would continue to respond to incoming calls and messages. These notifications would result in distraction and possibly prompt some distress, due to the student’s inability to respond. When we embarked on finding a reliable manufacturer for our Insight Security “FoneAway” locking phone pouch we examined an extensive range of currently available phone pouches, purchased from multiple manufacturers, all claiming to offer high quality products.
We discovered that only a few of the examined pouches provided a safe, reliable, high quality locking mechanism. We were also disappointed by the quality of materials used and manufacturing of many of the sample phone pouches. We discovered poor stitching, poor quality protective padding and weak structural strength around the locking mechanism - as well as poor lock design.

High-Quality Locking Mechanism

Magnetic locking systems on secure phone pouches use a simple, mechanical magnetic mechanism to secure a device without relying on batteries or software. The system generally operates in two stages for locking and unlocking.
The top of the phone pouch features a flap that folds over and is secured in place with a lock. A small magnetic locking pin is embedded in the lock structure. When the student puts their phone inside the pouch and folds the top flap over, the locking pin is pressed into a receiving hole where it is automatically locked in place, just like security tags used in retail environments.
An important feature is that the steel locking pin needs to be concealed when the phone pouch is either open or locked. Our FoneAway Lockable Pouches feature an automatically retracting pin that’s operated by a simple external plunger mechanism to lock the pouch.

To unlock and open a sealed phone pouch requires a specifically designed, strong magnetic base. Unlocking base stations allow controlled access to phones at appropriate times of the day or when required.

Handheld lollipop magnets, or magnetic detachers, are used to unlock secured mobile phone pouches by disengaging the magnetic locking pin that seals the pouch. These tools act as a key, allowing authorised users or staff to release the locking mechanism instantly without damaging the secure phone pouch.
This simple form of unlocking device can be carried by teachers and designated members of staff to allow pupil’s phones to be quickly and easily released when required. This portable unlocking device will also be useful for reception staff who may need to release a pupil’s phone if they need to leave the school for an appointment.
Wall-Plate Magnets
- Fixed unlocking points at school exits
- Helps manage large student flows efficiently.
Wall mounted plate magnets are simply magnetic unlocking mechanisms, conveniently situated to enable students to instantly release their phones when allowed to do so. Pupils can instantly release their phone pouch locks by tapping the pouch against the unlocking station at the end of a school day, ensuring their phones remain securely locked during designated "phone-free" hours.
Secure Lock Box Magnets
- Prevents unauthorised access
- Can be opened at designated times only.
Secure lock box magnets, often referred to as magnetic unlocking bases, are locked cabinets that keep the unlocking magnets locked away until designated times. The cabinets need to be opened at the end of a school day or during specific periods, allowing students to access the protected unlocking magnet to release their phones from their secure pouches. The new mandatory ban on mobile phone use in schools during the school day presents a number of challenges for schools and educators. Here are some key considerations.

Its important that every student, along with members of staff, is provided with a phone pouch. So its essential to budget for:
- One pouch per student (and staff if needed)
- Along with 10% extra for replacements and new students.
Typically, when a secure phone pouch is issued to a pupil, it becomes their responsibility and they will carry it with them at school and look after it while away from school. Pupils will normally be liable for the cost of a replacement pouch, in the event of loss or damage. These stipulations should be clearly stated in the school mobile phone policy and shared with pupils and parents.
4. Consider School Layout
Planning and positioning the locations of phone pouch unlocking stations is crucial to avoid bottlenecks and hold ups.
- Ensure there are adequate unlocking facilities
- Position unlocking stations strategically
- Avoid congestion at exits by installing multiple points.
