We are pleased to announce the availability of the formidable Rotaspike anti climb barrier from our online store. Read on to learn more.
Here at Insight Security we have extensive experience in providing effective anti climb security solutions that meet the varied requirements of every possible location. Some sites need anti climb barriers that don’t present any possibility of causing injury or harm and don’t look even vaguely aggressive, which is where our Roller Barrier non-aggressive anti climb barrier is widely used. But there are situations in which a more aggressive looking, rotating anti climb barrier is the best solution - and that’s where Rotaspike comes in.
What is Rotaspike?
Rotaspike (sometimes called Rota Spike) is an effective perimeter security device, designed to deter and prevent people from climbing over walls, fences, gates or other structures. An important aspect of the Rotaspike design is its formidable appearance. This nasty-looking fence or wall topper clearly sends a clear message to anyone considering climbing over.
The system consists of a central shaft or axle, robustly secured at regular intervals to whatever structure is being protected. A collection of rotating, side-by-side spiked collars are threaded onto the shaft. These spiked steel collars each have three, nasty-looking, 90mm spikes, welded onto the central tube.
If someone attempts to climb over the barrier the rotating spiked collars prevent them from gaining a grip. While the spikes are sharply pointed, the system’s primary defensive goal is deterrence.
Rotaspike Components
The Rotaspike system is designed for easy installation wherever anti climb protection is needed. A variety of support brackets are available to suit all manner of installation locations. All components are made from galvanised steel for long life. But the system can be supplied with a durable, baked-on coloured paint coating, if required.
The central shaft is available in lengths of 2 metres. The shaft can be cut and joined, using joining spigots, to fit any linear space. The rotating spiked collars have an overall diameter of 220mm with three 90mm long spikes.
L-shaped mounting brackets are ideal for mounting the barrier along a wall top or similar surface. And flat brackets are what’s needed to mount the barrier to Palisade fencing. Support brackets are required every 2 metres for horizontal runs and at 3 metre intervals for vertical installations.
Where is Rotaspike Used?
The Rotaspike perimeter security system is used to protect a wide range of assets and sites.
Critical infrastructure such as power stations, water treatment plants and telecommunications sites need robust security. Rotaspike serves to deter any would-be intruders and prevent unwanted, risky trespassers.
Commercial and industrial sites including supermarkets, warehouses, building material supply yards and factories, all need to reliably keep people out. Rotaspike ensures that valuable assets and equipment can’t be reached by potential thieves and intruders.
Public sector properties including libraries, government buildings and prisons, all need robust, reliable perimeter security. Sadly, many of these properties can attract unwanted intruders, but Rotaspike
effectively keeps them out.
Transportation hubs and railway lines need to remain secure and prevent unwanted intruders. Airports, for example, can’t risk the possibility that trespassers might gain access and cause disruption.
Many residential and private properties often need effective perimeter and anti climb protection. This protection may be required around an entire property boundary or it might be limited to certain higher risk windows or rooftops. Versatile Rotaspike can be configured to meet all manner of installation requirements.
Is Rotaspike Dangerous?
Importantly, although Rotaspike is designed to look aggressive and dangerous, the rotating nature of the barrier means there is minimal risk of causing injury. The rotating collars, with closely spaced spikes, make it impossible for a climber or intruder to gain a hand hold while the spikes present a very effective visual deterrent.
But it is important to remember that property owners and occupiers have a ‘duty of care’ responsibility toward anyone, including trespassers and burglars, who might come onto their property or attempt to gain entry. This means that wherever the Rotaspike barrier is deployed, adequate, clearly visible warning signage must be displayed.
In the UK, anti climb protection devices like Rotaspike generally must not be installed below a height of 2 metres on any structure that’s adjacent to a public highway or footpath, but we recommend a minimum height of 2.4 metres. When considering the installation of Rotaspike its always worthwhile consulting with local authorities and neighbours who might be affected.
Is Rotaspike the Right Anti Climb Solution?
While Rotaspike is clearly a highly effective anti climb barrier it isn’t ideal for every location where anti climb protection and deterrence is needed. In some situations an aggressive looking walltop or fence top would not be suitable, such as around psychiatric treatment facilities. Wherever there is need for non-aggressive anti climb protection that doesn`t look aggressive our Roller Barrier system is the ideal solution.
