Residue usually comes from using a tape above its temperature rating, leaving it on too long, or exposing it to sunlight.

Choose a tape rated for your process, remove it at the right time, and pull it back on itself at a steady angle. For high temperatures, step up to a high temperature crepe, polyester or polyimide tape.
