Surface energy affects how well adhesive can wet out and grip. Low energy surfaces, such as polypropylene, polyethylene and many powder coatings, resist adhesion.

Standard adhesives just sit on top and don't grip properly. Tapes designed for low energy surfaces use specialised adhesives that bond much better.
