ATG stands for adhesive transfer gun. The gun lays down a thin line of adhesive from a roll, leaving the liner behind on a take up spool.

It's far quicker than peeling and placing double sided tape by hand. You squeeze and pull, and the adhesive is applied in a single smooth stroke. That's why it's used in packing, framing and display work.
