Understanding Security Labels: A Complete Guide

Tamper-evident security labels (or “stickers”, to some) used alongside other security controls can greatly strengthen end-to-end chain of custody for goods, valuables and sensitive items across a supply chain. They help protect pharmaceutical and medicinal packs, resale goods, food and drink, electronics, medical devices and other high-value equipment from interference, unauthorised access, loss or degradation—safeguarding product integrity from dispatch to delivery.

What is a security label?

A security label is engineered to show clear evidence of interference by permanently changing appearance if removal is attempted. The most common type—void labels—leaves a visible “VOID” message on the surface when lifted, providing unmistakable proof of tampering. Labels are available in a range of face materials and adhesives, including permanent-residue, no-residue and specialist variants. Features such as perforations or slits can further enhance tamper indication.

Main base materials

Residue UniLabels (permanent/total transfer)
Leave a permanent VOID message on the sealed item as well as voiding the label itself. Ideal for single-use packs such as test tubes, cartons and small cartons.

Non-Residue UniLabels (no transfer)
Only the label voids; no residue is left on the sealed surface. Suited to short-term use on reusable totes, crates and containers.

Speciality hybrid / part-residue
Leave a temporary residue message that can be rubbed off after inspection, often combined with perforations to emphasise tamper evidence.

Vinyl destructible UniLabels (fragmentable)
Ultra-aggressive adhesive and frangible vinyl prevent removal in one piece—the label breaks apart when tampered with. Ideal for long-term asset ID on IT equipment and machinery.

Surface type strongly affects adhesion. Roughness, porosity, coatings, cleanliness, flexibility, temperature, moisture and surface energy all matter. High-energy (hydrophilic) surfaces typically give best adhesion. For tricky substrates, specialist material/adhesive combinations are available—contact sales@universeal.co.uk for advice and samples.

Types of security labels

Security labels protect packaging from tampering, counterfeiting and unauthorised access. Selecting the right type for your risk profile and application is essential to maintain product integrity and consumer trust.

Customisation features

UniLabel security labels can be tailored to your application, with stock lines available for immediate despatch and filtering tools on our website to help you find the right product. Advanced options such as holograms, microtext and QR codes enhance authentication and traceability.

Custom surface markings
Logos, warnings, unique serials and barcodes can be added. Overt designs deter interference and support brand identity; covert designs look plain until removed.

Custom void messages
Define your own sub-surface void pattern or wording to make labels unique and to inform recipients of a breach once the label is lifted.

Colours
Wide colour range with Pantone matching available, balancing brand presentation with security.

Security cuts (easy-break)
Scored labels that deliberately tear when pulled, useful across doors, cupboards and access panels where quick entry may be required but removal should be evident.

NEL/WEL orientation
Supply as Narrow Edge Leading or Wide Edge Leading for compatibility with hand or machine applicators.

Die-cuts
From “dumbbell” shapes for vials and bottles to large circular or square formats for pallets. Bespoke tooling available.

Specialist UV inks
Covert void messages visible only under UV, useful for discreet detection of interference.

Counterpart / dual number
Peel-off matching serials for manifests and paperwork to maintain chain-of-custody records.

Finger-lift edges
Non-adhesive margins for easier hand application.

Finishes
Supplied matt as standard; gloss finishes available for alternative presentation.

Paper material option
An all-paper face and adhesive blend reduces single-use plastics while preserving tamper evidence. Holograms, microtext and QR codes can still be incorporated.

Core applications

Pharmaceuticals

Overt tamper-evident seals increase confidence for distributors and patients by showing if packs have been opened or interfered with. UniLabels suit primary cartons, secondary master cartons and tertiary packaging (pallets and crates). They can function as anti-tamper devices under the Falsified Medicines Directive and may be applied by hand or via automated applicators.

Food, drink and pet products

Labels provide a visible integrity seal and can incorporate QR codes for authentication and traceability across direct-to-consumer, takeaway and full supply-chain logistics.

Logistics and transport

Security labels deliver positive control checks throughout distribution, deterring pilferage and counterfeiting. Sequential numbering and barcodes support track-and-trace to uphold chain of custody. UniLabels also perform in cold-chain environments down to −80 °C.
