Find The Needle Add My Company
So how have Google Classified your site then?
Did you know that Google ‘decides’ what a site is about, which topics it covers and which as far as Google is concerned it does not? Well it does. The GOOD news is that the site has a much better chance of being found for terms related to its defined topic area than others, but the BAD news is that getting good ranks for things that Google does not think you cover can be hard to say the least I have seen it dozens of times, web design companies not being able to get ranks for Graphic Design search terms, Conference management companies that also do team building activities only being listed for one or the other I can see why Google does this as it gives more businesses the chance of good rankings whilst stopping one huge business that does just about everything from dominating its results. It also means of course that some businesses just have to turn to Adwords to get a place on the first page of Google, it being impossible to do this organically because of their ‘classification’. But that’s just me being cynical perhaps? Why is this all important? It all goes down to what area you really want to be listed for, and then making sure you present a good case the Google that your domain really does cover that area. This is important as you don’t want to give Google the wrong idea as otherwise you could end up being classified as covering some other area But what if I want to cover more than one area? Most companies want to cover more than one zone of search terms, and if this zone is a close match they might be OK, it all depends on the areas and how Google views the situation. You can easily see this in action when you check the rankings for your target terms. No matter what you do they fail to rise significantly, only the ones in your designated topic area doing really well So what can I do about it then? Changing Google’s ‘mind’ could be well nigh impossible, and could result in you being taken out of one category and placed in another, which may not be what you want I tend to suggest a more softly softly approach here. Because while it may be impossible to rank on the first page for a two or three word phrase, it is VERY likely that a good well written piece of long copy, 2,000 words or more, could get found for a whole host of long tail keyword searches, searches that are related to terms that are not in your designated slot As these long tail searches are often made farther down the buying cycle, they can be more likely to convert too. This makes capturing them useful. You just have to make sure that the long copy has enough CLEAR Calls To Action so the reader starts looking about your site I hope this has helped anyone who has been wondering why Google list them highly for one thing and badly, or not at all for another area that they cover Always pleased to have a chat about SEO problems, so please call me on 01981 259 885 or email graham@somltd.co.uk
