Rippl at The Brits: Sustainability at Award Shows
In the world of celebrity, November to February means one thing; awards season. A time of glitz, glam and extravagance, which until now could be seen in contention with the global push towards sustainability. Thankfully in 2020 traditionally lavish ceremonies like the BRITS have chosen to put environmentalism centre stage by partnering with brands like ours. This year Rippl sponsored the Sony Music Brit Awards After Party, helping celebrities move towards a sustainable future. Here are some of the great ways award season is changing for the better. On the 18th February, all the best and brightest in the UK music scene gathered to celebrate a year of socially and politically charged, era defining music. The BRIT Awards since its inception in 1977 has been a feature of the British event calendar, always guaranteed to be a night of show stopping performances and culture defining moments. 2020 marked its 40th major show and it was set to be no different, always ahead of the curve, this year's BRIT Awards sought to shake up the industry in its approach to sustainability. The Sony Music Brit Awards unique aftershow party was one of many platforms they used to support the cause. Their traditional goodie bag, offered to celebrities and special guests, was packed full of sustainable treats including our very own Rippl Straw! We were delighted to sponsor the event and our contribution was received wonderfully by A-listers like Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Harry Styles and Meghan Trainor. Their acquaintance with the Rippl brand was a wonderful step towards highlighting the global environmental issues we all face today. The effort toward active change didn’t stop there either; through the staging of the annual BRIT Awards, The BRIT Trust has donated over £20 Million to fund charitable, social, environmental and ethical initiatives. By working with Julie’s Bicycle (a non-profit organization working to make environmental sustainability intrinsic to the business, art, and ethics of the creative industries) they aim to significantly reduce the environmental impact of the music industry and the annual BRIT Awards. This advocacy wasn’t lost on celebrity attendees who remarked on its significance throughout the night. Host Jack Whitehall made jokes at its expense and rock band Foals commented that “it’s something that needs addressing - along with sustainability too.” Like the Golden Globes and BAFTAs before it, The BRIT Awards opted for a sustainable, ethically based catering company. With food waste being cited as the third largest cause of global warming, catering company Payne and Gutter adopted a policy of zero waste. Their responsible menu architecture and reusable cutlery significantly contributed to the environmental effort. These decisions by Sony Music and The BRIT Awards come as part of an overall shift towards Award Shows providing a more ecological, ethical minded experience for attendees and viewers. The red carpet has also seen an influx of sustainable fashion, modelled by celebrities choosing to recycle past award show outfits or remodel new ones from existing pieces. Similarly, winners like Joaquin Phoenix at the Oscars, have used their platform to speak out on environmental issues like veganism and the devastating forest fires in Australia. 2020 is an important year for environmental change and hopefully the sustainable choices made at The BRIT Awards signals an industry change that makes waves all across the entertainment sector and beyond. If you would like to be part of that change, pick up a Rippl product today and start your own Rippl effect.
