An Out of This World Play Area for East Dunbartonshire

Proludic are the go-to experts for play and sports areas that respond to current and future standards for play, access, inclusivity, and safety. East Dunbartonshire Council certainly agree! They recently appointed Proludic to deliver a £470,000 play and sports destination. The council brief was to meet the needs of toddlers, children and young people. The project was a success and brought new life to the area and fun for all!

Proludic’s aim was to create a fresh, ambitious space with a strong focus on inclusivity. To achieve this, our team firstly removed the existing fenced play area, outdoor gym equipment and wetpour surfacing. This meant we had a blank canvas from which to work to develop the new playground.

The Council playground brief set out a demanding minimum equipment requirement with an emphasis on inclusive play. This brief included multiple types of playground swings: inclusive harness swings, a carer and tots swing, basket swing, and rope swing. The design also necessitated an inclusive roundabout and wheelchair-accessible seesaw (J987).

Proludic not only met these council specifications but expanded the offer with a wide variety of play, sport, sensory and family activities.

“An Out of This World” Play Area

The completed scheme was themed around space travel and titled “An Out of This World Play Area”. At its centre sits a striking Metropolis multiplay unit (J47101) with a stainless-steel corkscrew slide, creating the large “WOW” feature. Alongside this, the design provides slides at four heights, a double-width slide, a 30-metre double cableway and a diverse mix of equipment encouraging swinging, rotating, climbing, bouncing and sliding.

Ultimately, the play area offers 296+ play values and capacity for more than 154 users, while the outdoor gym zone supports 100+ users and 90+ sports activities, complemented by 15+ fun game activities for the whole family.

A key challenge was the site’s history of water gathering on the old play area. To address this, Proludic incorporated an extensive drainage solution across and beneath the site, improving long-term performance and usability.

Community consultation was held in the local library, with three companies presenting designs. Proludic received the highest number of public votes, demonstrating strong local support. Part-funded by the Scottish Government, the project created a vibrant, accessible and exciting destination that quickly captured the imagination of local children and families.
