When Kate and Vicky went to India
Our talented senior designer Kate and fabulous director Vicky have just returned from a hard working trip in India and we thought we would share it with you. We love to reveal our journeys and to keep you up to date with what is happening in and out of our head office in Cornwall. Kate and Vicky flew to Delhi last month. It was Kate’s first visit as Senior Designer for Nomads so it was a big trip for her to meet our Fair Trade suppliers and to be introduced to Manoj, who oversees all our work that takes place in India. The main focus for this visit was to develop upcoming collections for Autumn Winter 2016 and Spring Summer 2017 focusing on the new shapes for garments that Kate has been designing for Nomads. The trip was very successful and they got lots done. It was great for Kate to meet everyone and to for her to learn which is the strongest factory to use for each print and fabric and what type of styles she can design – depending on their capabilities. We asked Kate how she found the different factories and what set them apart from each other. “There are similarities between all the factories as well as all having their own specialities and the personalities of the people we work with at each one often defines them. Some are more craft based and some specialise in printing, some are quite small and others much larger. It is important to visit the factories especially with our ethical beliefs to ensure the conditions and set up are as we expect. We also work with our factories to get organic and Fair Trade accreditation wherever possible. India was a great source of inspiration for the coming collections especially for handicraft techniques, embroidery details and print designs’” Kate and Vicky worked in both Delhi and Jaipur. Kate likes both places for the hustle and bustle of Delhi and the relative calm and culture of Jaipur. “As a designer it is a fantastic country to work. India has a rich history of fabric, print and craft heritage and the inspiration that you get from being there is great. I visited the textile museum in Jaipur at the central palace which was full of beautiful clothes and furnishings from the royal family, with incredibly intricate detailing as well as more day to day items and the history surrounding them. In India the light is very different so you see new and surprising colour combinations as well as being able to find lots of ideas for print, handicraft and embroidery techniques” Vicky has always preferred Jaipur as it is closer to where Nomads began, so it has an importance in the history and nostalgia of Nomads. The creative team had a very positive trip so they are very much looking forward to their next visit to India later on this year as they will be able to spend more time researching in India for the following Spring Summer 2018 collection.
