Find The Needle Add My Company
Nomads' first in-house designer.
An exclusive first hand interview with Nomads first in – house designer, Kate Sullivan–Tailyour. We would like to introduce you all to our extremely talented new Head Designer, Kate and give you a taster of her magnificent creative process. Here at Nomads we truly love what we do and who we work with so we like to keep you up to date with our journey. Kate, studied European Fashion which included French and business and spent a year in France studying textiles and assisting a Parisian designer. Kate loved designing textiles as it gave her a greater understanding of fabric structure and colour vital for fashion design. After graduating she has successfully worked for designers and independent brands in London. Kate also created her own label which was Fair Trade and used organic fabrics and resulted in her being a finalist in the British Councils Young Fashion Entrepreneur award. The prize was an industry visit across India where she learnt about the Indian fashion industry and its ethical side. Since joining us at Nomads she has recently moved to Cornwall with her husband and whippet, Sky. One of Kate’s greatest inspirations is travel which fits the Nomads ethos perfectly. Seeing other cultures and their crafts, textiles and architecture opens up new ways of thinking about design and the combination of Kates existing knowledge combined with new insights gained through adventure really excite her creativity. Kate also enjoys visiting art galleries and exhibitions. Her most recent visit to the V&A was to see the Fabric of India exhibition showcasing Indian textiles, embroidery and craft. Kate also gathers inspiration from her favourite designers which include, Isabel Marant, Vanessa Bruno and Dries Van Noten. She loves the relaxed shapes, fabric and mix of colours and prints that they use. We asked Kate about her design process and how she starts her new beautiful collections. “When I start working on a new seasons collection I start with fabric and trend research, although I’m not overly trend focussed it is always good to see the new colours and shapes coming through and edit out what is relevant to the Nomads brand and new collection. I start by putting together moodboards of colour stories and overall looks I would like to achieve. I travel to several fabric and print trade shows which influences the collection hugely as the fabric and prints are so key. I then recolour the prints into combinations which fit with the seasons colour stories and send these to the Fair Trade factories for the first ‘strike-offs’. Next I work on sketching up the shapes for the collection and doing the technical specs to send out to factories. A few weeks later the first samples arrive and we can start fitting these on models, ready for the second samples which need to be ready in time for the trade shows and finally the seasons collection is ready for our wonderful customers. Timing and planning is key to getting everything ready in time and co-ordinating with the various factories” We also quizzed Kate on the direction she would like to take Nomads with future collections; “Nomads is a great brand with lots of loyal customers so it is a case of building on what is already there and adding some fresh new shapes and details which I am very excited about. I plan to bring in some new colour palettes, whilst keeping to the colourfulness that Nomads is known for, and add a new injection of shapes for our customers. I am also planning on bringing in more textural woven fabrics, handloom fabric and handcrafted details, including building on the Nomads heritage of Tie-dye, embroidery and block printing” We are so excited to have Kate working with us and feel very lucky that as a team at Nomads we all share the passion for creating a brand which is ethical, sophisticated and unique.
