Case Study on Shaft Sleeve
Motion Industrial products have recently been called upon to try and give a chemical plant increased life and performance from two of their main 90KW pumps and to try and save on the amount of water being used in the gland flush system. The customer was complaining that the shaft sleeve used to protect their valuable Hastelloy shaft was not lasting any longer than one month in continuous operation due to the 6 rows of Gland packing wearing away the stainless steel shaft sleeve. Having looked closely at the application it appeared that the customer was using a gland packing which did not keep its square profile. As the shaft sleeve wore down, The gland packing was pushed in tighter to try and control the leakage. This however, was actually accelerating the wear and combined with the amount of flush water being used, it had created a type of grinding paste and as such the shaft wore out very quickly. More gland packing was then being inserted and more water was being used. This was all at a considerable cost to the customer, both in the cost of the items being purchased and the amount of downtime and man hours that this was creating. We knew that the sleeve had to be chemically resistant, so we did our homework and suggested the use of a specially hardened stainless steel sleeve, coupled with a different type of gland packing which had reinforced corner posts in order to keep its square profile. These items were purchased from us and fitted for the same cost which the customer was previously paying. These have been in service now for 8 weeks and so far the customer has not had to once tighten up the Gland packing and say that the shaft sleeve is showing no signs of wear. The water usage has also been dropped by 6 times the amount. The end result is one happy customer!!!
