Beef Up Shed Security with a Shed Bar

Signs of spring means its time to pay attention to our sheds and outbuildings. In our latest blog we look at how easy it is to beef up shed security by installing a shed door bar.
Many of us treat our garden sheds as storage spaces without giving much thought to security, but that’s a mistake. With recent data showing that escalating thefts from sheds and outbuildings cost UK households thousands and many people (over 50%) don’t bother to regularly check their shed locks and security - it`s clear that we all need to pay attention to our shed door security.
What Is a Shed Bar?
If you do a Google search for ‘shed bar’ or ask an AI tool ‘what is a shed bar’, the answer you get describes converting a shed into a private backyard pub or entertainment space. While this can be a lot of fun, the shed bars we are talking about are very simple security enhancements for existing shed or outbuilding doors.
A shed bar is a simple but highly effective security device that locks across your shed or outbuilding door to stop it being forced open. Rather than relying on a padlock or latch alone (which can be vulnerable to leverage or cutting), a shed bar is a solid steel bar that’s locked in place, horizontally across the shed door’s face. When slotted into its fixings and secured with a padlock, the bar prevents the door from being opened, even if a would-be thief tries to pry, lift or bend the door. Essentially, a shed door bar adds another layer of door security on top of the existing door lock or padlock and hasp.
Our shed door security bars feature an optimal hook end design that offers maximum flexibility allowing the bar to be inserted from either end. This means the security bar can even be used where sideways space is restricted, such as where one end of the shed door is close to an adjoining wall or fence.
These robust bars are made from 10mm thick solid steel that slots into equally robust brackets, all galvanised for weather protection.
Shed Door Bar Sizes Available
Some sheds have fairly standard single doors while other might have double doors. Our shed door bars are available in a range of lengths, suitable for a wide range of shed door widths. Stock sizes are
- For single shed doors: 950 mm, 1200 mm and 1500 mm bars
- For larger or double doors: 1800 mm, 2000 mm and 2500 mm variants
- Bespoke shed door bar sizes are available on request.
Fortress-Style Protection, Simple Design
The idea behind the shed door bar design isn’t new. It’s rooted in the same logic that builders used in ancient fortresses to protect doors. Medieval keeps and castle gates were often reinforced with thick horizontal bars that strengthened vulnerable points and blocked access even if locks were compromised. Attackers would resort to using battering rams in their attempts to breach castle gate security.
Modern shed bars apply the same physical security principle: add robust material across the entire door to counteract leverage and prevent the door from swinging open under force. Unlike flimsy latches, a thick steel bar across a shed door is a powerful deterrent that dramatically raises the effort required to break in.
Why Shed Security Matters in the UK
Sheds aren’t just for garden tools anymore. Many UK homeowners store high-value items such as lawnmowers, electric tools, barbecues, bikes, and specialised equipment in their outbuildings. According to insurance industry data, the average claimed value for shed thefts runs into thousands of pounds, yet many owners still leave their sheds unlocked or unsecure.
Modest investment in a shed bar along with a strong padlock significantly improves shed security, minimising the risk of losing valuables to opportunist thieves.
Easy DIY Installation
One of the best features of our shed security bars is how straightforward they are to install. Fitting a shed bar is well within the capabilities of most homeowners. If you’re comfortable using a drill, hand tools and spirit level, you’ll have no problem. Here are some practical tips to make the job straightforward and secure.
- Measure your door width to select the correct shed bar size.
- Fit the brackets to the shed door frame using the supplied coach bolts.
- Slide the bar into place across the doorway.
- Secure with a quality padlock (sold separately).
Use the Right Tools
To successfully install a shed door security bar you will typically need:
- A cordless drill/driver.
- Wood drill bits.
- Socket set or spanner.
- Spirit level.
- Pencil and tape measure.
Choose the Right Position First
Before drilling anything:
- Fit the bar horizontally across the strongest part of the door, usually around one third down from the top.
- On double doors, position the bar so it spans both leaves and prevents either side from being pulled open.
- Make sure the bar clears hinges and door furniture.
Tip: Hold the bar in place and mark bracket positions lightly in pencil before drilling.
Fix Into the Shed Frame — Not Just the Cladding
The effectiveness of a shed bar depends on what it’s anchored to. That`s why its important to firmly attach the shed bar brackets to the shed frame and not the more flimsy shed cladding.
- Always bolt the brackets to the solid timber frame of the shed, not the thin shed cladding boards.
- If your shed frame is lightweight, consider reinforcing the fixing area with a backing plate or additional timber inside the doorframe.
- The shed bar works by spreading force across the shed doorway structure, so strong fixings are essential.
Keep It Level
Use a spirit level when marking your bracket positions, to make certain the bar will be perfectly horizontal once installed.
If the bar is even slightly angled, it may:
- Slide awkwardly into place.
- Catch on the brackets.
- Put uneven stress on one side.
Tip: Taking an extra minute to level everything will save frustration later.
Allow for Door Movement
Wooden sheds tend to expand and contract slightly with temperature and moisture changes. This must be allowed for when installing a shed door security bar.
- Make certain the brackets are mounted to allow the bar to be easily inserted.
- Leave just enough tolerance for smooth operation without excess play.
- If your shed door tends to drop slightly over time, position the bar where it won’t bind if that happens.
Choose a Quality Padlock
Any security system is only ever as strong as the weakest element. Its therefore vitally important to use a high quality padlock with your shed door security bar.
- Use a high quality padlock such as a discus padlock.
- Avoid thin, budget brass locks that can be cut quickly and easily.
- Make sure the padlock shackle fits snugly through the shed bar eye.
A popular padlock for use with our shed door security bars is the Squire DCL1 70mm Discus padlock or the Master Excell Discus Padlock with an 80mm Boron Carbide shackle. A good quality padlock significantly increases resistance against bolt cropper attacks.
Consider Weather Protection
Our range of shed bars are galvanised for outdoor use, but it’s still good practice to:
- Maintain the padlock with some suitable lock lubricant.
- Periodically check shed bar fixings for tightness.
- Re-treat any exposed timber around bolt holes with wood preservative.
How Long Does a Shed Bar Installation Take?
For someone with average DIY skills, shed door security bar installation typically takes 30–60 minutes. There’s no wiring, no specialist equipment, and no need for professional fitting. Basic DIY skills, careful measuring and simple tools are all that’s needed for a successful installation.
Applications Beyond Sheds
Although designed for sheds, these security bars are highly versatile. They can also be used on:
- Beach huts: Adding a highly visible door security deterrent to flimsy beach hut doors helps protect these valuable seaside structures from thieves and vandals.
- Mobile catering units and burger vans: Our galvanised shed door security bars are used to add robust door security and serving hatch security to mobile catering trailers and burger vans that are often left locked up and unattended.
- Garages or workshops: Garages, workshops, summerhouses, barns and other outbuildings can all benefit from bolstered door security provided by installing a shed door security bar.
Final Shed Door Security Considerations
A shed bar is one of the simplest security upgrades you can make to your shed, and one of the most cost effective and easy to install. With affordable options ranging from compact bars for smaller, single doors to longer steel bars for larger openings, adding this layer of security helps protect the wide range of valuables we store in our sheds.
Whether used on a backyard shed or a beach hut by the coast, shed door security bars are a simple, classic, fortress-inspired solution for modern security challenges.
