Health and Safety Executive Clampdown on Occupational Asthma in Bakeries A study published recently has stated that the problem of Occupational Asthma for in-store bakery staff was a real one. It claimed that one worker in ten was at risk of developing asthma from flour and powdered mixes. As a responsible employer in the baking industry you will be aware that you have a responsibility to ensure that your employees work in a safe environment. The COSHH (Control of Substances Hazardous to Health) Regulations 2002 state amongst other things that flour dust must not exceed 10mg/m3. The HSE has conducted a survey that shows that only 27percent of those bakeries surveyed were aware of the legal exposure limits relating to dust. It is now the intention of the HSE to take a higher profile in checking bakeries in order to ensure compliance of the COSHH Regulations. In order to do so they aim to take on new staff to specifically target smaller bakeries stating that “This work could lead to further targeted enforcement – HSE sees no need for workers to suffer this disease which can ruin a worker’s life, in the 21st century.” Here at flextraction Ltd we have a product that is designed specifically with the bakery industry in mind - a three stage filtration down flow booth.
