Firma-Chrome highlights the benefits of electropolishing, an electro-chemical process that removes a thin layer of base material to eliminate oxides, impurities and surface irregularities. By targeting the microscopic ‘peaks’ left by machining, the process reduces surface roughness (Ra value) while delivering a smoother, high-lustre finish.
Commonly applied to 300-series stainless steels, electropolishing also removes free iron and iron oxide contamination created during machining, grinding or fabrication. At the same time, it forms a chromium-rich surface layer that significantly improves corrosion resistance.
Following electropolishing, components are typically passivated in a nitric acid solution to remove any remaining free iron, particularly in areas such as tapped holes or crevices that may not have been fully exposed during the process.
The result is stainless steel parts that are smoother, cleaner and more hygienic. As the process removes hydrogen from the surface – preventing bacteria from multiplying – electropolishing is ideal for demanding sectors including medical, pharmaceutical, semiconductor and food processing.
