Water-Jet Cutting Rubber

WATER-JET CUTTING RUBBER While every day we cut large, thick pieces of rubber up to 50mm, we are also asked to produce parts normally made by other methods. This is the case with the small sleeves seen here – with just 0.5mm wall and cut in 12mm thick material, these parts would previously have been lathe cut from mandrel built tube finished on a cylindrical grinder. While the finish would have been finer on a ground product, these water-cut parts have proved to be ‘fit for purpose’ and have been made at 1/4 of the price! WHY WATER-JET? As can be seen with these small Silicone gaskets, water-jet cutting can achieve a flange width that is narrower than the thickness of material. Were these parts to have been press-cut, they would have had concaved edges. To mould would have meant new tooling and several days delay in producing parts – by water-jet we are able to cut and supply on a next-day basis.
