Safety Tips to Keep You and Your Family Safe this Fall

Safety Tips to Keep You and Your Family Safe this Fall
16/08/2021

Fall brings with itself cooler temperatures which are undoubtedly enjoyable and beautiful. However, accidents due to heavy snowfall or storms can be dangerous for you and your family. Moreover, crime rates are increasing, and burglaries and thefts are on the rise.

While the safety of the public falls on the shoulders of law enforcement personnel, it’s also equally necessary for private citizens to take the necessary precautions to safeguard their own lives and those of their loved ones.

But there’s nothing to worry about. With some safety tips in hand, you can enjoy Fall with your family.

Winterize Your Pipes During Fall, water can freeze, which can burst the exterior pipes. You can prevent this by insulating your home and pipes, disconnecting all garden hoses and draining any water left in outdoor fixtures and automatic sprinkler systems.

You can also use foam, heating cables, or pipe sleeves to ensure that the pipes stay warm enough, and seal any cracks in the home’s exterior. If temperatures drop below freezing overnight, leave exterior faucets trickling to avoid the pressure build-up that causes burst pipes.

Prepare for Power Cutdowns Heavy snow and ice in Fall can take down power lines. Instead of staying in the dark, prepare for such situations by buying a generator, flashlight, lanterns, extra batteries and Security Lights. Also, invest in a two-way radio for staying updated on the news regarding power outage. Look for one that uses solar power, batteries, or a hand crank.

It’s essential to stay in touch with your family, friends and neighbours. It might be challenging to do so when the signals are weak during a storm. Therefore, you should use a hand-crank or solar-powered cell phone charger until the storm passes.

Apart from these items, keep warm clothing, blankets, non-perishable food, and bottled water in an emergency kit for bad weather emergencies.

Prepare the Roof Before Fall starts, clean the roof and remove leaves, pine needles and other debris which can hold moisture, rot and damage your homes if there is any leak in the roof. Also check the roof for damaged, loose, or missing shingles that may leak when the snow melts or during severe storms. Check if seals around chimneys and vent stacks are intact as well. If they aren’t, you can make repairs yourself or hire a handyman.

Make sure to double-check your homeowner’s insurance coverage regarding roof repair, water damage, and other risks associated with bad weather.

Install a Home Security System Heavy snow leads to poor visibility, and it gets dark more quickly in Fall. Burglars may use this to their advantage. Therefore, the installation of Home Security Systems should be your top priority.

You can install CCTV’s, Intercoms, Alarms, Security Lights and Carbon Monoxide Detectors to keep you and your family safe. Carbon monoxide (CO) is a poisonous gas and a silent killer because of its propensity to leak and travel undetected within the home.

With these safety tips in hand, you can take precautions beforehand and try making your Fall stress-free. It is better to be safe than sorry!
