Improving Fleet Safety with Driver Identification and Controlled Ignition

Health and safety doesn’t stop at the workshop door. For many companies, one of the biggest day-to-day risks sits in the yard, depot or on site: vehicles being moved by unqualified or unauthorised drivers. Whether it’s a van, a pool car, site vehicle or plant, a quick “I’ll just move it” can turn into a serious incident.

To help organisations reduce that risk, Colter Products Ltd has developed a new fleet accessory that connects directly to a vehicle tracker, adding a simple but effective layer of driver identification and control.

Meet the FSC-1266 Immobiliser

The FSC-1266 Immobiliser is designed to enable controlled vehicle ignition through either a telematics system or a Dallas key. In short, it helps ensure the right people can start the vehicle – and everyone else can’t.

This is ideal for fleets and sites where vehicle access needs to be managed more tightly, including:

Construction and building sites
Warehousing and distribution
Service fleets and depot operations
Facilities teams and multi-vehicle organisations
Any site with strict health and safety policies around vehicle use

How it works in normal operation

Under normal operation, the FSC-1266 listens for a signal from the vehicle’s telematics system. That signal activates or deactivates the unit’s internal relay, which then permits or prevents engine start.

If the telematics input confirms the ignition should be enabled, the relay allows the vehicle to start. If not, the relay prevents ignition and the vehicle remains immobilised. This creates a clear control point, helping managers restrict vehicle use to approved drivers and reduce the likelihood of vehicles being moved without authorisation.

Dallas key override for authorised access

Colter Products Ltd has also built in a practical override feature using an authorised Dallas key. This means ignition can be enabled independently of the telematics input when needed, while still keeping access controlled.

To initiate engine start using the Dallas key, the driver simply holds the key against the reader for approximately one second. This action energises and latches the relay, allowing the vehicle to start.

Once engaged, the relay remains active until the primary ignition is switched off. That means the system is straightforward for drivers to use, while still offering a strong level of control and accountability.

One key, multiple vehicles

For businesses running multiple vehicles, practicality matters. The FSC-1266 has been designed with that in mind.

Each Dallas key can be programmed for use with multiple readers, allowing a single key to operate across multiple vehicles. In other words, authorised staff don’t need a different key for every vehicle, and fleet managers can assign access across a group of vehicles based on job role, location or responsibility.

This approach makes it easier to scale controlled ignition across a fleet without creating admin headaches.

A smarter way to reduce risk and improve accountability

Vehicle movement incidents can result in damage, downtime, insurance claims and, most importantly, injury. The FSC-1266 Immobiliser is designed to reduce those risks by preventing unauthorised vehicle starts and providing a clear, controlled method for enabling ignition.

By integrating with a telematics system and offering a secure Dallas key override, Colter Products Ltd has created a practical solution for fleet operators who want to strengthen health and safety processes, improve vehicle security and keep site operations running smoothly.
