Find The Needle Add My Company
The council’s new air compressor was a simple enough challenge made a little more complex by the site’s flood risk. THE CLIENT East Lindsey District Council sits on the Lincolnshire coast, east of Lincoln. In 2021, the council made the decision to bring its fleet maintenance in-house. It was a big undertaking, with the Louth-based vehicle maintenance unit taking on the repair and maintenance of 24 refuse collection vehicles, 30 light commercial vehicles, three street sweepers and numerous pool cars, trailers, gritters and water bowsers. Compressed air is a vital element in the unit’s power supply. Without it and its ability to support the programme of vehicle maintenance, gritters can’t grit, sweepers can’t sweep and waste collection vehicles can’t collect waste. THE CHALLENGE The existing three phase compressor sat in an outdoor compressor house. It was old and needed replacing, but that wasn’t the only issue. The depot in Louth is in a flood risk area and it was important to ensure that, in the event of a flood, the compressor would still be able to supply air power to help keep the council’s vehicles on the road. OUR RESPONSE We installed a new 3-phase NUAIR air compressor in the compressor house, setting it on raised foot mounts to keep it clear of floodwater. With all electrics raised high above any potential flood level, the site could be under a foot of water or more and the compressor will still be able to deliver its power effectively.
