Studer S22 - The new production platform for cylindrical grinding
Following the introduction of the S12 and the S242, STUDER have come up with another innovation. But the S22 is more than just a machine. It is based on a platform and, thanks to its modularity, can be configured with the desired STUDER components for almost any grinding application. The S22 production platform is completely focused on the customer and his workpieces. Although the basic dimensions are given, any configurations are possible. In respect of components such as workhead and wheelhead or tailstock, all parts that STUDER has ever developed and produced are available on the S22. The platform also has no fixed distance between centres. This is between 650 and 1100mm, depending on configuration. Naturally the S22 is suitable for universal cylindrical grinding in the production environment, high speed grinding (HSG) or heavy duty applications. Head of development Reto Zwahlen explains "With our new development we cover all options offered by our proven S36, whilst providing additional benefits through larger grinding lengths, rotating dressing devices and much more. The features of the S32 (the S32 is specialised in high speed grinding) are also incorporated into the S22. Also, StuderWIN, STUDER's new Windows based operator interface, offers many new advantages." The S22 is equipped with a Fanuc 310i-A CNC control with integrated PC". Configuration of the machine Studer is also breaking new ground with the configuration. An overview which contains a functional diagram of the basic machine with all possible component variations, ensures transparency in the decision-making phase. The customer can thus discuss the options internally and make a preliminary selection. The requirements are then verified in detail with Studer's professionals and the optimal solution developed jointly. Machine design and drive All S22 versions have the proven GRANITAN® machine bed with its excellent damping characteristics and thermal stability. The X and Z-axis are designed as a cross slide, while the workpiece table is bolted permanently to the machine. Two different axes drive systems are available for the S22. The X-axis is equipped with roller guideways as standard, and the Z-axis has a guideway with patented surface structure. The drive is provided by a ball screw spindle. For the highest dynamics and precision, STUDER offers an alternative with direct drive and friction-free guideways in both axes. The hydrostatics and linear motors allow axis movements up to 30 m/min. Precision to a tenth of a micrometer is easily achieved, thanks to the measuring system resolution of 0.01um. Assemblies Chuck or universal workhead, standard or high-precision C-axis (position and speed controlled for form and thread grinding), belt or motor spindle wheelhead, standard, synchronous or fine grinding tailstock, dressing from the rear with a wide variety of devices etc. - the broad selection meets every possible requirement. An integrated measuring system for measuring during the grinding process, for re-measuring, recording, evaluation and correction guarantees comprehensive quality control. For high-speed grinding there is a B-axis with two grinding spindles in versions left/left or right/left for ø 400mm wheels in the cutting speed range between 80 and 140 m/s. Heavy-duty applications with a 160mm wide grinding wheel are also possible. Automation There is also a large range of loading and unloading systems. The machine can be charged on both sides or from above, and is ideal to be linked. Appropriate peripheral units guarantee seamless integration into the respective production process.
