With the 85-30 SMART, WITT introduces the world’s first smart flashback arrestor, thereby ushering in the second revolution in fuel gas safety. This patented innovation combines WITT’s tried-and-tested safety elements with integrated sensors and electronics. As a result, safety-related events such as flashbacks and backfires can be detected and communicated in real time for the first time. Users gain new transparency regarding the status of their gas supply and can manage operation, maintenance and safety with significantly greater precision than before.
Real-time monitoring for maximum process control
The 85-30 SMART is based on WITT’s technologically advanced, tried-and-tested mechanical design, which has been providing reliable protection against the hazards of fuel gas use for decades. A new feature is the active monitoring function: the fitting not only stops flashbacks and backfires, but also detects them and immediately provides the information as a signal.
This transforms the fitting from a passive safety component into an active sensor within the gas system. Seamless monitoring enables an immediate response to irregularities and lays the foundation for a stable, safe process. Personnel, plant and system components are protected even more effectively, and service life can be extended. At the same time, maintenance becomes more efficient, maintenance measures can be planned more effectively to meet requirements, and downtime is significantly reduced.
Proven technology as a foundation
Technically, the SMART version is based on the tried-and-tested 85-30 flashback arrestor. This features a flame arrestor made of sintered stainless steel, a temperature-controlled backflow preventer, a gas non-return valve and an integrated dirt filter. It is available in brass or stainless steel and is suitable for numerous gases such as acetylene, hydrogen, natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas and oxygen.
The 85-30 fully complies with the requirements for safety devices in accordance with DIN EN ISO 5175-1. The high reliability of the fitting is confirmed by external certification from the IBExU Institute, whose test criteria even exceed the legal requirements and represent the highest level of certification worldwide. Since 2025, IBExU has been carrying out the testing and certification in the autogenous technology sector on behalf of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing (BAM).
From the point-of-use model to Smart Safety
The launch of the 85-30 SMART marks a significant milestone in WITT’s corporate history and in the safe handling of fuel gases. In 1945, company founder Paul Witt revolutionised protection against flashbacks with the first dry point-of-use supply system – an innovation that has had a decisive influence on today’s DIN EN ISO 5175-1 standard. With the current patent for the 85-30 SMART, WITT is consistently bringing this development into the digital age and setting new standards once again.
Ideal for interconnected gas supply systems
Thanks to its signal transmission capabilities, the 85-30 SMART is ideally suited to modern, digitally networked production environments. The new WITT fitting supports the digitalisation of gas supply systems and lays the foundation for greater operational safety, improved plant availability and increased efficiency.
