17/4PH Stainless
Stainless steel grade 17-4, a chromium-nickel-copper stainless steel, maintains high strength up to a temperature of approximately 600° F and provides a level of corrosion resistance that surpasses the 400 series of stainless steels. Although this grade is most commonly referred to as 17-4 because it is 17% chromium and 4% nickel, it is also known as 630 alloy. Grade 17-4 Stainless Steel has shown a resistance to corrosion which exceeds the 400 series of stainless steels. 17-4 Stainless Steel has a martensitic structure in the annealed condition and requires a low temperature treatment to sustain a higher level of strength. Tempering is recommended to prevent hydrogen embrittlement, chloride stress corrosion cracking and other such deteriorations that are more likely to afflict untempered metals.
