From Zero To Hero In Less Than 48 Hours

On a particular Wednesday, a customer visited. "We have an Exhibition in Germany next week, so I need an enclosure to put these components in, and by the way, I need it assembled as well, all by Friday. Can you do it?" He had tipped out some boards and components, including a Raspberry Pi, on to the table, but there were no drawings. It was a new design based on the Raspberry Pi plus a new mezzanine board with custom software and they wanted to test the market at the exhibition. We narrowed the enclosure type down to a couple of alternatives. However, with no drawings we had to measure up the mezzanine board to get the clearances. We also downloaded the dimensional data for the Pi SBC; the spacing between the two boards was critical to get them to fit into the enclosure. However we couldn't source the correct spacer size in time, so we had to make our own using long screws and some plastic pipe, which we happened to use on one of our machines. With the spacing defined we created a drawing of the part from which the CNC programme could be made. The machining was a bit difficult as there were 3 sides to be machined, all with tight tolerance apertures lining up. After a couple of iterations it all fitted perfectly and the prototype was delivered on the Saturday morning. His product was well received and we have now made the pre-production batch of 50 ready for another exhibition in Las Vegas.
