What is the Difference Between Gas Pressure and Gas Density

Gas pressure rises and falls with temperature, even when not a single molecule has escaped. A switchgear compartment can read low on a frosty morning and perfectly fine by the afternoon.

Gas density measures the amount of gas actually in the compartment, which is what determines insulating performance. That is why switchgear is monitored for density rather than raw pressure, so false alarms from temperature swings are avoided.

Trafag gas density devices are precise, reliable and maintenance-free, built for SF6 and the complete range of alternative insulating gases. See the full range for datasheets and options.
