The hotel has 312 rooms for both tourist and business guests, 2 restaurants and offers extensive, business, corporate and banqueting facilities. It has hosted high profile corporate events and political party conferences. Accordingly it is a high energy user and in 2009 was spending over £120k per annum on gas alone. "At QHotels we take our corporate responsibility extremely seriously." Says Philip King. "We recognise that environmental sustainability and reducing our Carbon Footprint is of the utmost importance to our customers, team members and local communities. We decided to trial the TEC 500 boiler management control at the Midland Hotel Manchester. The result showed an overall gas reduction for the hotel of 5.3% the installation had no impact on hotel operations." The reduction is impressive in view of the fact that some 50% of the hotels gas usage comprises non-heating uses of gas, including the large restaurants in constant daily use and a large laundry facility using gas driers. Moreover the trial was just on the heating only boilers, so the hot water was left alone. Thus, a reduction in overall gas usage including the non heating load of 5.3% meant that pro rata the saving on the heating load exceeded 15%. Philip added: "As a result of this impressive result, further installations were commissioned and have been completed across the Group from Westerwood in Scotland to the Ashford International in Kent, with more in the pipeline going forward."
