Warehouse Safety Tips

Whether you’re a manager in a warehouse or just an employee working, you want to ensure that safety is being kept in mind at all times. Failure to keep safe can lead to injury, illness, legal issues, high employee turnover and underperforming staff. Safety measures can protect from hazards and ensure that workers can carry on with their day without any risks.

So here are some warehouse safety tips to keep everybody safe.

Slips, Trips, And Falls

Many accidents in the workplace happen from slips and trips, being one of the most common causes of work-related injuries. Ensure staff clean up any spillages and remove any obstructions from the warehouse floor when possible. When cleaning is in progress, make sure that clear signage is left out. Try to arrange cleaning outside of normal working hours, then there is less chance of an accident occurring.

Lifting

Many injuries happen in the workplace from workers attempting to lift things that are either too heavy or they attempt to lift them incorrectly. Make sure each employee knows how to lift correctly to avoid injury, and that they know the weight limits of manual handling. If you have access to vehicles, use these while possible for lifting.

If you have to run cables or anything else across the floor, use cord covers to help prevent trips. You can also use anti-slip paint and tape to reduce how slippy a surface will be, reducing the chance a worker could trip over.

PPE

Personal protective equipment (PPE) is one of the best ways to ensure safety in your warehouse. Hard hats are great if there is a risk of things falling from above, while high-vis jackets are another essential. High-vis attire is important if vehicles and other heavy equipment is used at your warehouse, to help prevent any incidents occurring.

Vehicle Safety

Leading on from high-vis helping when vehicles are on site, there are many other ways to ensure safety when vehicles are present. Only allow staff to drive vehicles such as forklifts if they have had suitable training. Try to set up your warehouse to be as visible as possible, to avoid the risk of somebody suddenly stepping out in front of a vehicle.

Also make sure the vehicles have regular inspections and maintenance checks, to ensure they are working at their best. Provide drivers with a list of what to look out for, so if there is an issue it can be quickly identified and stopped.
