Find The Needle Add My Company
New Year, New Paint Job

You’re feeling rejuvenated by the start of a new year and want to freshen up your home with a new lick of paint, but how do you prepare the room? To make sure you start your new year’s paint job off on the right foot, the Top Towers team have put together a helpful list of the things you need to remember when preparing a room for painting.

Move furniture out of the way

First things first, you need to take out all of the furniture from the room. The last thing you want is your sofa, chairs or tables to be spattered with little flecks of paint as these are very difficult and time consuming to remove.  If it’s tricky to get items out of the room, at the very least, push the furniture to the centre of the room and cover it with a dust sheet.

Cover the floor completely with a dust sheet

Whether you have a lovely thick carpet or a polished, hardwood floor you’ll want to ensure that it is protected from any stray paint marks that may fall during painting. Similar to furniture, paint can be hard and time consuming to remove from floors, so it’s better to avoid the issue all together and cover up. You’ll need several dust sheets, or one very large one, that can encompass the entirety of the floor space. If you have some edges that you need to fill, you can use newspaper or magazines to cover any naked parts of the floor.

Protect the skirting boards with tape

You’ll need some masking tape, also known as painters tape. Use this to cover any edges. These include skirting boards, window frames, sockets, light fittings and any other mouldings that could end up ruined, making your paint job look messy.

Ensure you have a ladder

To reach the ceiling and all the corners of the room you will need to have a painter’s steps and ladders. The ladder you use will depend on the job at hand, so think carefully about your requirements before hiring or buying painter’s steps. You may need one that extends, or perhaps you’d benefit from a multi-purpose ladder that enables you to reach those hard-to-reach points in the room. To be on the safe side, it’s best to discuss your requirements with reputable steps and ladders suppliers to ensure you source the best equipment for the job.
