Slow Worms in the City
Nature appears in the strangest of places – the Three Shires team were called to Greenford to safeguard an urban slow worm population using Herpetosure Slow Worm and Newt Fencing.Working under ecological supervision from WYG ecological consultants, for clients Schroeder, Three Shires was commissioned to install reptile fencing around a disused Brownfield site in greater London. The 1.5 hectare site was not only inhabited by protected slow worm species, it was inundated with shrub, trees and extensive over grown vegetation. Three Shires initially installed Herpetosure Slow Worm and Newt fencing to prevent nearby slow worms from entering the main site area and contain them in the dedicated receptor adjacent to the site. The challenging ground conditions and the sensitive fencing position meant that the majority of the slow worm fencing needed to be installed by hand. The client and ecologists chose Herpetosure Slow Worm and Newt Fencing due the potential risk of vandalism; Herpetosure is robust, vandal resistant and fire retardant and would stand up to the tough site conditions. Once the reptile fencing had been installed, Three Shires were asked to carryout sensitive clearance works across the site. All clearance work was carried out under ecological watching brief by WYG ecologists. The site sensitive clearance involved strimming, chainsaw cutting and the use of our low ground pressure mobile chipping unit. All arising were collected and transported off site. All the above works were carried out to prepare the site for development in the coming 12 months.
