THE AVIATION MUSEUM AT GATWICK

A recent turnkey project for 3CB has been a steel framed aviation museum. 3CB undertook the demolition, groundworks & foundations, building design supply & construction together with the electrical/alarm fit out. Planning constraints were driven by the building volume and since only a small portion of the planes were tall the building was ‘stepped’ to gain maximum floor area for other exhibits using an innovative combination of 3CB’s hot rolled and cold rolled steel section solutions. Following the success of the project 3CB is now in discussion with the client with regards to further installations. Due to the building volume driven planning constraints the aviation museum wished to store this lovely Lightning fighter within the building and hence we designed a taller section at the rear to carry the large concertina doors and thereby accommodate the tail fin of the aircraft.
