Kent-based technology company introduces new design engineering expertise, advanced manufacturing equipment and a complete product development service covering 3D scanning, CAD design, prototyping and production.
Surface Scan, a UK specialist in 3D scanning, 3D printing and product development, has significantly expanded its capabilities to provide a complete end-to-end product design and manufacturing service.
The expansion marks the company's development from a professional 3D scanning and rapid prototyping bureau into a full-service product design and manufacturing partner.
Customers can now access 3D scanning, CAD design, product development, prototyping and production through one experienced team at Surface Scan's headquarters in Ramsgate, Kent.
Complete Product Development Under One Roof
Product developers, manufacturers, engineering teams and inventors often need to work with several different suppliers when creating or improving a product.
A project may begin with a specialist scanning company before moving to a CAD design studio, prototyping provider and separate manufacturer. Coordinating these suppliers can increase lead times, create communication problems and make design changes more difficult to manage.
Surface Scan's expanded service provides a single point of contact throughout the entire product development process.
The company can capture existing components using professional-grade 3D scanning, convert the scan data into accurate CAD models, refine or redesign products, produce prototypes for testing and manufacture finished parts in production quantities.
The complete service is summarised by the company's new message:
Scan it. Design it. Make it. All under one roof.
New Design Engineering Capability
As part of the expansion, Surface Scan has appointed dedicated design engineer Toby Allen.
The addition of in-house design engineering enables the company to support customers at an earlier stage of product development. This includes developing initial concepts, improving existing designs, creating production-ready CAD files and reverse engineering components where original technical drawings are unavailable.
The company has also invested in additional production equipment and advanced engineering materials.
New capabilities include a Formlabs SLA resin 3D printer, CNC machining services and high-performance engineering plastics such as PEEK. Further equipment and manufacturing capabilities are also planned.
These investments allow Surface Scan to support projects from an initial idea or physical component through to a tested, manufactured and production-ready part.
Reducing Product Development Lead Times
Daniel Carson, CEO and Founder of Surface Scan, said:
“We kept seeing the same thing. Clients would come to us with a product challenge, we'd solve the scanning or printing piece, and then they'd disappear to find a designer or manufacturer and lose weeks in the process.
“We've built the capability to hold the whole chain now. One conversation, one team, one result.”
By bringing design, prototyping and manufacturing into one operation, Surface Scan aims to reduce delays between each stage of development.
The integrated approach also allows design changes and prototype feedback to be communicated directly between engineers, technicians and customers without repeatedly transferring files and project information between separate companies.
Supporting Multiple UK Industries
Surface Scan has delivered 3D scanning, printing and manufacturing projects for organisations across a wide range of industries.
Previous clients and projects include work for Amazon, AllSaints, the NHS, Eurotunnel, Formula 1 and MotoGP, alongside engineering companies and consumer product brands.
Its services are used across sectors including aerospace, automotive, motorsport, medical technology, retail, manufacturing and consumer goods.
The company has also received more than 145 five-star customer reviews and supports businesses, product founders and engineering teams throughout the UK.
With its expanded product design and manufacturing capabilities now in place, Surface Scan is actively working with customers who require support from initial product concept and reverse engineering through to prototyping and finished production parts.
