Find The Needle Add My Company
Metal fabrications and Metal Sculptures
In one of my previous lectures, and they are lectures, I mentioned soft props and how they may be soft but are, in essence, just as hard as the hard as props we make. However, they are in no way as hard as metal. Fact. Metal is really hard. Undoubtedly harder than soft, this is indisputable. So what kind of metal fabrication and sculptures have we made? Well, most of our fibreglass props have some metal within them to make them even tougher, or to allow them to be fixed in to something. We made a giant fibreglass tap prop that had a water pump and reservoir to hold litres upon litres of water that was needed to flow through the spout of the tap which looked as though it was suspended in mid air, but the secret to the illusion lay in the metal tube that held the tap suspended and also allowed the water to flow up to the tap from the metal reservoir beneath. We made a sculpture for the grounds of a new apartment block in London, which happened to be Jim Henson’s old studio, where they made the Muppets; I mention Animal from The Muppets in a previous lecture… The sculpture was a metal circle approximately 8 foot in diameter which had fibreglass sections attached, painted with exterior paint to look like oak. We made a 12 foot diameter speaker for The Royal Shakespeare Company which was a metal structure with Lycra stretched over and plastic and other materials attached, we recently made a unit that had a 3 metre diameter metal base clad with plywood and with vinyl applied to promote the new ride The Smiler at Alton Towers, sponsored by Kellogg’s Krave, we had to make giant Krave cereal props and chocolate props that were all attached to the metal base. Look in our Gallery to see the finished piece as it is difficult to picture it from explanation alone.
