HOW TO SECURELY INSTALL RUGBY POSTS
Groundskeeping generally refers to looking after the greens and marking lines on the sports fields. However, sometimes you’ll need to install structures, as well. Today we will look at how to install rugby posts. There are a number of specialized pieces of equipment to help install these posts, but as long as you have a way to create the holes, you can do this with the help of a few strong people. More and more rugby posts are now available with anti-theft devices. If you choose one of these, you’ll need to pour concrete and set the ground sockets into the concrete. USE THE POSTS TO MEASURE Assemble the posts and lay them out on the field so you can be certain of where to place the holes. It’s easiest if you have the equipment to bore holes, but even if you don’t, you can use a post digger to create the holes in the right places. Be sure to measure very carefully to ensure the posts are being placed in the right position. SECURE THE SOCKETS The safety sockets will need to be set into concrete footings. You’ll need to mix the concrete and then pour it into footings that are at least 15 cm deep and 5-6 cm in diameter. Place the sockets in the concrete and allow it to harden for three days. LIFTING THE POSTS Many companies use a crane or other piece of equipment to lift the posts into place. However, you can do this with several people helping. First, lift the posts and set them into the ground socket. The spigots should face the opposite post so that you can place the crossbar. Lift the crossbar and set over the spigot on each post, then lock into place. It’s a good idea to double check the security of all your fittings. You may then go on to do the other posts on the opposite side of the field. An alternative to assembling once the posts are set is to assemble the entire goalpost on the ground and then use specialized lifting equipment to set the entire piece into place. However, most smaller sports grounds do not have the means to invest in a piece of equipment like this and will need to hire it or simply find another way to do the job. Are you planning to set up some rugby posts? It’s important to choose the right posts and to be sure you have the equipment that is necessary for the sport.
