ARTIFICIAL GRASS VS. REAL GRASS

ARTIFICIAL GRASS VS. REAL GRASS
23/07/2021

Many sports fields require grass of some sort and whether you’re preparing for cricket or lawn bowling, you need to have that green. Is it better to opt for artificial grass or stick to real grass?

Both options have their pros and cons and you’ll find that it really depends on the situation as to which is best.

Before you make a decision, you should be fully aware of why each should be considered. Here’s all you need to know.

PROS OF REAL GRASS There’s nothing quite like real grass and it’s a renewable source of green. The upside of real grass is that it is great for the environment. The grass is a living plant that filters out pollution and provides oxygen. It also absorbs heat, which makes it useful in urban settings. In general, installing real grass is more cost-effective, at least to start. It also has the advantage of letting you add more seed if there’s a thin spot, to grow new coverage.

CONS OF REAL GRASS However, the grass may be planted, which means you need to wait for it to grow, or you can use sod, which will give you instant green. Real grass also needs to be watered and well maintained so this means either manually watering or installing a sprinkler system. Wet ground can be hard to play on, so you’ll have to plan to water when the field isn’t in use or things could get muddy. Regular aeration is also essential to keep the grass healthy and you may end up needing pesticides. Lastly, grass is also more difficult to maintain, as it can be torn up from the ground and wears down rather rapidly.

PROS OF ARTIFICIAL GRASS When you install artificial grass, you have a very flat playing field. It is already created at just the right height to make playing fun and it’s relatively easy to install. The durability is the biggest upside of this option since it can hold up to repeated use without showing signs of wear for quite some time. Additionally, artificial grass doesn’t need watering, so it’s good for the environment in that way. It can also be made from recycled materials to be more eco-friendly. Maintenance is also minimal, as it needs to be washed briefly from time to time in order to remove the dust and you can simply brush it to make the fibres stand up again.

CONS OF ARTIFICIAL GRASS The downsides are few. Artificial grass is just that, artificial, and it can never truly compare to the real thing. It looks decent because of the colour, but up it may create a different experience especially while playing sport. Plus grass can cost more to install but it actually saves money over time, due to less water usage and maintenance.

Which choice is the right one? That’s entirely up to you. Artificial grass will hold up longer and look great, but real grass is just more natural. Which is better for your situation?
