HOW TO MAINTAIN YOUR FOOTBALL GROUND
Football is the most popular sport in the UK and football grounds are often the heart of a community, school or college. Millions of us love a kick-about but a poorly maintained pitch can make a game of football less enjoyable. A neglected pitch can also have poor quality grass and you could do further damage by continuing to play. It’s important to maintain your football ground, whether it’s a field used for a game after school or a semi-professional pitch, so read on for our top tips. REGULAR MOWING Pitches need to be mowed regularly to keep the grass in the best condition possible. It’s recommended that grass is mown to a length of one to two inches in summer and two to three inches during the colder months. Don’t rake the fresh grass off the field after mowing as this can cause unnecessary damage. The mown grass should blend in with the existing pitch; if it doesn’t, you’re mowing too infrequently. You should also try to mow in a different direction each time to evenly distribute grass across the field. CONTROL WEEDS Weeds can ruin the aesthetic look of your football ground and interfere with play. Regularly inspect your pitch for weeds and remove them by hand where possible to prevent spreading. Herbicides can be used to control weeds but an excess can damage your field. Consult a professional first to find out which type of herbicide is best and the correct amount. FIELD MARKINGS Faded or patchy field markings don’t look great and it makes play much more difficult. If the pitch is used regularly, you’ll probably need to repaint every two to three weeks. A local club might want to invest in their own spray marking machine, or you can arrange for a professional company to paint the markings for you.
