HOW TO MAINTAIN ARTIFICIAL GRASS
If you’ve opted for an artificial grass playing field or sports court, you’ll need to know how to look after it. People often think that artificial grass is completely maintenance-free, but this isn’t the case. While it is often easier to maintain that real grass, anything that’s exposed to the elements will need at least a little bit of TLC every now and then. To help you keep your playing field or sports court in pristine condition, Sportsmark Group Ltd have come up with this simple guide to maintaining artificial grass. Keep reading to find out more! KEEP IT CLEAN One of the most important factors in keeping your artificial grass looking healthy is cleanliness. Thanks to the UK’s wet climate, it is largely self-cleaning – rain is an effective, cheap, and easy way to keep your grass clean. However, during those rare dry spells, your artificial grass will certainly benefit from a hose down. This will clear it of dust, dirt, pollen and other pollutants, as well as ensuring the sand infill remains well distributed. The frequency of these cleanings will depend on how much the artificial grass is being used and what the surrounding conditions are. On the whole, though, we suggest hosing it no more than once every other week. While artificial grass cleaners are by no means necessary, they certainly won’t do your grass any harm. Alternatively, household detergents such as washing up liquid can come in handy for any spills and stains on your artificial grass. REMOVE LEAVES AND DEBRIS Debris has the potential to encourage weed growth, so we recommend removing leaves and other debris regularly. The best way to do this is using a specialist artificial grass rake, a broom, or a leaf blower or leaf vacuum. Make sure you don’t use a metal rake on your artificial grass, as this could do significant damage to its synthetic fibres. How often you need to clear your artificial grass depends on the surrounding environment and the time of year – for instance, if it is surrounded by trees it’ll need clearing frequently, particularly in autumn and winter. BRUSH IT REGULARLY We also recommend that you regularly brush your artificial grass. This will prevent matting and ensure the fibres – or blades of “grass”, if you will – remain in an upright position. To achieve the desired effect, you’ll need to brush in the opposite direction to the synthetic fibres. To brush your grass, use a stiff broom or a specialist artificial grass rake. Again, under no circumstances should you use a brush with metal or wire bristles as this will damage your artificial lawn’s fibres.
